What to expect on moving day

Moving day runs smoothest when you know what’s coming. Here’s exactly how a Smart Penny Moving® job unfolds — from the moment our crew arrives to the moment we leave your new home.

The Arrival Walkthrough

Our crew arrives within the scheduled window and introduces themselves before a single item moves. We’ll ask you to walk us through both what’s going and what’s staying. This isn’t a formality — it’s how we make sure nothing gets loaded that shouldn’t, and nothing gets left behind that should. We’ll also note any pre-existing damage to furniture or walls for liability purposes. This takes 10 to 15 minutes and sets the whole job up for success.

Parking the Moving Truck

We handle parking logistics before the job starts. In cities like Cambridge where street occupancy permits are required, we secure the permit in advance. In North Reading, Framingham, and Woburn, we position the truck to minimize carry distance and keep the job moving efficiently. If your building has specific parking rules, let us know when you book — we plan around them.

Layers of Protection

Before anything moves, everything gets protected. Furniture blankets, stretch wrap, and corner pads go on every piece that needs them. Floor runners protect your hardwood floors and carpets at both the origin and destination. Door frames get padded in buildings where clearance is tight. Protection isn’t a premium add-on — it’s standard on every job.

Loading the Truck

Loading is strategic, not just fast. Heavy items anchor the base, fragile pieces get cushioned, and furniture is positioned to prevent shifting during transit. Every box is loaded label-up so we know what’s inside without opening it. A well-loaded truck means your belongings arrive in the same condition they left — and unloading at the other end is faster and more organized.

Final Walkthrough at the Origin

Before we close the truck, we walk through every room with you. Closets, attic access, storage areas, the garage — everywhere. The goal is to make sure nothing was overlooked. If something was intentionally left behind, we confirm that with you. We don’t leave until you’ve signed off that everything meant to go is on the truck.

Time to Get on the Road

Once the truck is loaded and the origin walkthrough is complete, we head to your new address. For local moves across Cambridge, Woburn, North Reading, or Framingham, we coordinate the most efficient route. For long-distance moves, we confirm the destination details and estimated arrival window before departing.

Walkthrough at the New Home

Before we start unloading, we walk through your new home with you to identify where everything goes. Which room is the master bedroom, where does the couch face, is there a specific spot for the bookshelf — the more direction you give us at this stage, the less moving furniture twice later. This walkthrough takes 5 to 10 minutes and saves significantly more time during placement.

Unloading and Placement

Items come off the truck in the right order — furniture first, then boxes organized by room. Every piece goes directly to the room you indicated, not just inside the front door. Boxes are stacked neatly and labeled sides face out so you can find things without unpacking everything at once. Nothing gets dropped and left — items are placed where you want them.

Furniture Assembly

Anything we disassembled at the origin gets reassembled at the destination — beds, wardrobes, desks, shelving units, and anything else that required breaking down to move safely. We bring the right tools and we know how the pieces go back together. You don’t need to source a different crew or figure it out yourself after a long moving day.

The Final Walkthrough

Once everything is placed and assembled, we walk through every room with you one more time. This is where we confirm placement is where you want it, check that nothing was missed or damaged, and make any last adjustments before we wrap up. The job isn’t finished when the truck is empty — it’s finished when you’re satisfied.

Truck Inspection and Departure

Before we leave, we do a final check of the truck to make sure nothing was left behind. Packing materials, blankets, dollies, and equipment all get loaded back. We clear away any packing debris from your new home and leave the space clean. Payment is processed at this point — you’ll know the final amount before we start, with no fees added after the truck is loaded.

Moving Furniture — What You Can Do to Help

The more prepared your home is when we arrive, the faster and smoother the job goes. A few things that make a real difference: have a clear path from rooms to the exit, make sure parking is available near the entrance, keep pets and young children in a separate room during the move, and have a sense of where you want furniture placed at the new address. You don’t need to do anything beyond that — the rest is ours to manage.
